New WA housing trend shows families on the move with modular solutions

The flexibility of modular housing solutions is proving popular with a growing number of Perth families choosing to build a transportable home they can take with them or sell separately to the land.

TR Homes General Manager Dale Putland said his sales team had noticed a new trend emerging with Perth people taking advantage of the flexibility offered by modular construction in order to capitalise on rezoning changes.

“We are starting to see people in suburban Perth think much more seriously about building a modular home rather than the typical brick and tile,” said Dale.

“In one case we had a family identify the opportunity down the track to subdivide a larger block in an older suburb and one of our modular houses presented the perfect solution.”

Home buyer Katherine Cresey explained that she and husband Pete were attracted to the modular alternative for a number of reasons but especially because of the flexibility.

“The suburb that we have bought in is about to rezone so with a modular home there is potential for us to either shift the house to the front of the block, sell the house or move it to another location,” said Katherine.

“We figure that if our circumstances ever change in the future and we want to move to the country we can just take our home with us.”

“We also really liked that this is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option, so if we decide to subdivide we don’t have to knock the house down.

“We were really impressed by the quality of the homes as well. When we first tell people that we are building a modular home, you can instantly see the shock on their face and no doubt their instant thoughts are that we are building a big shed or donga.

“But once we show them a couple of pictures and explain it all they are pretty impressed.

Dale Putland said in another recent case, a customer had identified a block for potential redevelopment and chosen to build a modular home to keep alive the option of moving the house on the block and subdividing.

“That is one of the great advantages of modular housing,” he said.

“You can take it with you when you move – and it is a much more realistic option that many people realise.

“Not only that but new technology and construction methodologies means that buying modular doesn’t mean compromising on quality.

“We find a lot of people’s reaction the first time they visit our display village is shock – because they have this outdated image in their mind of modular or transportable home meaning low quality or lacking finish.

"TR Homes prides itself on producing high quality homes that have all the flexibility and faster construction time of modular building meaning people no longer have to compromise.”
