Last year we introduced you to Kerry and Trevor Strydom who built an Independent Living Unit (Granny Flat) for their son Todd who has autism.
We're happy to announce their unit has won us another Transportable Home of the Year award at the Perth HIA Housing Awards on Saturday night!
Kerry and Trevor built a Coogee on their property in Yanchep.
"TR Homes' Coogee design provided a practical solution to assist Todd's transition to independent living while still being close to the main family home and his support networks," Kerry said. "The unit is bright and easy to clean, with a six star energy rating, which was very important to us."
"We've noticed more self-assurance in Todd since he moved into his own unit," Kerry said. "It is envisioned that the life skills gained and relationships fostered now will assist the gradual evolution of Todd being able to live independently while maintaining a job he enjoys and connecting with friends.”
Flexible housing solutions are at the top of the trends in residential building options, especially given the rising costs of housing.
More and more families are exploring the possibilities of independent living units and granny flats for various reasons including:
- Home for elderly parents
- Teenager/student pad or young married couple
- Home office
- Workers or shared accommodation
- A unit with additional rental potential
The Strydoms are elated with the news of the win. A very big thank you to Kerry, Trevor and Todd!
